SETI dishes

Welcome to the SETI Challenge site. SETI is the Search for Extra Terrestial Intelligence, i.e. looking for signals from other civilizations. If we were to receive a signal, could we decode it? What techniques would an alien civilization use to encode a message, and what message would they send?

This site is meant to make us think about ways in which signals may be encoded, by setting decoding challenges. Each challenge is independent, you can tackle any one you want.

We have recently detected an unmistakeable SETI signal. After doing several checks, receivers around the world have confirmed there is a strong signal coming from the vicinity of Gliese 581, if not from Gliese 581 itself.

The signal is being sent at 1.4204 gigahertz, the frequency emitted by neutral hydrogen. It appears to be a message of 299 on/off pulses, repeating indefinitely. The message is given as a string of 1s and 0s below. 1 corresponds to a pulse and 0 corresponds to the absence of a pulse.

A signal has been detected repeating in a different spot in the sky to the First Challenge. Can you decode this one?

The signal can be listened to on the left, and the signal has been released as a data file here: message2.csv. The numbers in this file are samplings of the amplitude of the signal.

An interesting signal has been detected in the sky, it seems to be repeating and isn't coming from a human source. The signal has been made public, and everyone races to decode it.

A sound clip of the signal can be played on the left, and the signal has been released as a data file here: message1.csv. The numbers in these files are samplings of the amplitude of the signal.
